If you're an Indian business bidding on government tenders and you don't have Udyam Registration, you're leaving money on the table. It's completely free, takes minutes online, and unlocks powerful benefits — EMD exemption and a price preference that can win you contracts you'd otherwise lose.

What Is Udyam Registration?

Udyam is the official MSME (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprise) registration system introduced by the Ministry of MSME, Government of India in 2020. It replaced the old UAM (Udyog Aadhaar) process.

Every registered MSME gets a Udyam Registration Number (URN) and a Udyam Registration Certificate (URC) that must be mentioned in bids to claim MSME benefits.

Why MSMEs Need Udyam for Government Tenders

Without Udyam, you're treated as a non-MSE bidder and lose:

Benefit How It Helps
EMD Exemption No Earnest Money Deposit required for MSMEs
L1 + 15% Price Preference Match L1 price and win at least 25% of quantity
Price Band Flexibility Price up to 20% above L1 in some cases
Lower Performance Security Some tenders reduce it for MSMEs
Quota Protection 25% mandatory MSE procurement by central departments
Preference in evaluation MSME firms get preference where quality is equal

MSME Classification (2026)

The classification is based on investment AND turnover:

Category Investment in Plant & Machinery Annual Turnover
Micro Up to ₹1 crore Up to ₹5 crore
Small Up to ₹10 crore Up to ₹50 crore
Medium Up to ₹50 crore Up to ₹250 crore

Your enterprise can be classified based on either criterion — whichever makes you fall into the higher category when combined.

Step-by-Step: Free Online Udyam Registration

Step 1: Prepare Your Aadhaar / PAN

  • Proprietorship: Proprietor's Aadhaar + PAN
  • Partnership/LLP: PAN + Aadhaar of managing partner
  • Company: PAN + Aadhaar of authorized signatory (e-filing needs GSTIN)

Step 2: Visit the Official Portal

Go to udyamregistration.gov.in — the only official registration site.

⚠️ Security warning: Udyam registration is free. Never pay third-party websites or agents charging for "registration" — many are scams.

Step 3: Fill the Application

Provide:

  • Aadhaar number
  • Enterprise name
  • Type of organisation
  • PAN and GSTIN (if applicable)
  • Address details
  • Bank account details
  • Business activities (NIC code)

Step 4: Submit — It's Instant

After OTG verification, your application is processed. The Udyam certificate is generated instantly and free in most cases.

Step 5: Download Your Certificate

Download and keep the PDF. Note your Udyam Registration Number — you'll cite it in every bid.

How to Claim Udyam Benefits in Your Bids

  1. Mention the Udyam Registration Number in the bid document
  2. Attach a copy of the Udyam Registration Certificate
  3. State clearly: "EMD exemption claimed under MSME policy" (where applicable)
  4. Link Udyam to GeM account so price preferences apply automatically

Udyam vs Old Udyog Aadhaar

Factor Udyog Aadhaar (old) Udyam (new)
Launched 2015 2020 (current)
Classification Investment only Investment + Turnover
Verification Self-declaration Aadhaar-linked
Status Phased out Current standard

If you have the old registration, migrate to Udyam to receive current benefits.

Common Udyam Mistakes

  1. Paying third parties — registration is free; avoid agents
  2. Not mentioning Udyam in bids — benefits only apply if declared
  3. Wrong Udyam number — company name must match exactly
  4. Expired certificate — keep the URN active and current
  5. Wrong classification — verify you're claiming the right category
